Extremely rare and collectible Buffet Bass Clarinet with range to to Low Eb

This is indeed a rare instrument with great history and provenance, some of which is included here in the photos. Unplayed for many years, this professional instrument is now being offered as a commission sale.

The wood is in great condition showing no cracks and the keywork responds well under the fingers. The pads are a type of neoprene, very similar to Superpads. A full service and check over is currently being undertaken and the instrument will be ready for testing in early July 2023.

The instrument plays with a very sweet and smooth tone. Intonation at 440 htz is excellent in all registers. Whilst this is considered a vintage instrument, it can easily be used for modern repertoire and is suitable for orchestral and solo use.

Purchased new in the 1950’s by the first owner Colin Rathmall, the instrument has been played professionally in numerous orchestras and ensembles over the years including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Session Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Bournemouth Sinfonietta to name but a few.

The instrument is stored in a period hard case. However it will be sold in a Reed and Squeak case as the hard case no longer offers sufficient protection. The new owner will be offered both cases. The original mouthpiece is present and included in the sale.
