Purchased new from Howarth’s of London this stunning clarinet has had very light use by an up and coming professional who used this clarinet as a spare instrument.

The new Buffet Crampon Tradition has been inspired by a 1960s design while taking into account the demands of modern repertoire and contemporary performance practice. Its brand-new cylindrical bore complements the R13 and RC bore families, adding a new acoustic dimension to the Buffet range.

“Le son à l’état pur” — “Sound at its purest” — is the phrase Buffet Crampon uses to describe this instrument, and it is a fitting one. The project was undertaken with the aim of creating a clarinet in its most natural form, free from unnecessary changes or overemphasised technology. The new bore concept draws inspiration from one of the earliest modern professional clarinets, the legendary Buffet Crampon BC20.

Featuring a cylindrical bore design, the Tradition recalls the purity of sound associated with the BC20, while incorporating tone-hole placement inspired by the Tosca. The result is an instrument with a clear, focused, and rich sound, suitable for a wide variety of acoustic environments, together with an even scale and consistent intonation throughout all registers.

These innovations allow both amateur and professional clarinettists to concentrate on making music, rather than constantly adjusting embouchure and voicing.

Interestingly, this new clarinet is also firmly rooted in research and development involving both Buffet Crampon’s American and French artists. This may not seem especially significant at first, but it is worth noting that most new Buffet models since 1960 have been developed almost exclusively with French players, often those working within the Paris music scene. This broader, more international consultation process is surely a step in the right direction.

The American team consisted of Buffet Crampon artists Jonathan Gunn, Burt Hara, Victoria Luperi, Mark Nuccio, and Gregory Raden. The French team comprised Michel Arrignon, Nicolas Baldeyrou, and Paul Meyer.
